Advanced Overlay Builder for Live Clipping

Written by Yoanna Hristova

The overlay builder adds text, images, shapes and components to a clip — either from a saved team template or as a new overlay built from scratch. Items can be edited in the video preview, animated, grouped and saved for reuse.

Opening the overlay builder

Open a clip in Live Clipping and select Overlays above the video preview. The builder opens on the right-hand side.

Control

What it does

INSERT

Adds an item: Add text, Add image, Add shape or Component.

Undo / redo

Steps back or forward through recent changes.

CREATE GROUP

Groups selected items so they move and animate as one.

CLEAR ALL

Removes all items from the overlay.

SAVE

Saves the overlay as a reusable team asset.

✅ Tip: The settings cog turns Snapping on or off and sets whether overlays are cleared after sharing.

Adding an overlay

Start from a template

The fastest option when the team already has a branded overlay ready to use.

  1. Open the Overlays tab.

  2. Select Use a template.

  3. Search or browse, then choose a template that matches the clip.

✅ Tip: The clip's current aspect ratio is selected automatically as a search filter, so only overlays that fit the format are shown.

Create a new overlay

Best for quick one-off additions, such as a label or a logo, or for building a new reusable design.

  1. Open the Overlays tab and select New overlay.

  2. Select INSERT and choose the item to add.

  3. Move or resize the item on the video preview.

  4. Select SAVE.

Working with items

Select an item by clicking it in the video preview or in the item list to open its settings. Advanced options, such as text shadow, sit in collapsible sections. From the item list:

  • Show, hide or delete an item.

  • Move items up or down in the layer order, for example to keep a shape behind text.

  • Duplicate an item and edit the copy to keep styling consistent.

✅ Tip: build the main structure — key text, images and layout — before spending time on advanced settings.

Animations and groups

Each animation belongs to a phase. An item can have several animations.

Phase

What it controls

In

How the item appears on screen.

During

What the item does while visible.

Out

How the item leaves the screen.

Add an animation

  1. Select the item and open its animation view.

  2. Add an animation and choose the phase — In, During or Out.

  3. Select the animation style, for example a fade.

  4. Adjust the timing. Use starts after to set when the animation begins.

✅ Tip: For an item fully gone after 10 seconds, add a 1-second fade out in the Out phase that starts after 9 seconds.

Group items

  1. Select multiple items.

  2. Select CREATE GROUP.

  3. Move or animate the group as a single object.

📕 Note: Use staggered timing sparingly. Overlays are easier to maintain when timing stays simple.

Saving an overlay

Give a new overlay a name the team will recognise. When editing an existing overlay, choose to:

  • Overwrite the existing overlay.

  • Save as new to create a variation and keep the original unchanged.

📕 Note: Work in progress can be continued when returning to the builder. Starting a fresh overlay clears it, so a confirmation is shown first.
